Chassis
The size and weight of funny cars are regulated very closely with the wheelbase no longer than 125 inches and no shorter than 100 inches. According to the NHRA, a funny car chassis is made of exactly 179 ¾ feet of 4130 Chromoly tubing with a weight of 125 pounds.
Motor
The Funny Car’s key component is an 8.1-liter (496 cubic inch!) V-8 developing about 11,000 horsepower and some 8000 lb-ft of torque. It’s capable of revving to 8,600RPM. The engine is a development of the legendary 426 Hemi V-8, using a block and heads machined from solid aluminum billets.
Tail Pipe
The engine of a Nitro Funny Car generates around 150 decibels of sound at full throttle, enough to cause physical pain. In fact, the NHRA once allowed a team of seismologists to stand at the starting line to measure the race the way they would measure an earthquake — the two cars rated a 2.3 on the Richter scale.

Drivetrain
Simply put, the drivetrain links the engine to the wheels. A special, timer-regulated clutch mechanism transfers the engine’s power to the rear wheels in a carefully controlled process. Over a period of three seconds, a hydraulic throw-out bearing and ram applies pressure gradually to the clutch until the engine and drivetrain are matched up. During this process, the clutch can reach temperatures of 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Body
Funny car bodies must be styled resembling a 1991 or later two-door coupe or sedan and weigh between 87 and 89 lbs. Funny car carbon-fiber bodies are made of a special four-element graphite weave, resulting in strong, lightweight materials.
